  • Career Highlights: Prior to London, Solo was an alternate for the 2004 games and won gold in 2008 in Beijing. Along the way there have been plenty of ups and downs. She was the starting goalkeeper at the 2007 World Cup, recording three shutouts, but was benched in a semifinal loss to Brazil. Solo lashed out at then-coach Greg Ryan and was not with the team in the third-place game against Norway. She would bounce back before the ’08 Games, where the U.S. would go 5-1 in competition with Solo recording three shutouts en route to the gold. After the games, Solo battled a shoulder injury which later required surgery in 2010. Following a lengthy layoff, she was back in the spotlight at the 2011 World Cup. The U.S. reached the finals, where they lost to Japan in penalty kicks, although Solo was named the competition’s best goalkeeper. Solo had two shutouts in the first two games and led the U.S. to an emotional win in the quarterfinals over Brazil on penalty kicks. A semifinal victory over France was the 100th game of her career. Solo has been bothered by the shoulder injury since the World Cup - it's forced her to the sidelines for the Women's Professional Soccer season - but is hoping to avoid surgery. Prior to joining the U.S. national team, Solo was a standout at the University of Washington, where she first began playing in goal. She was a four-time All-Pac-10 selection and is the school’s all-time leader in shutouts, saves and goals-against average.
