Scouting Report

40 time: 4.57

2nd Round

Overview: Asamoah is a rising fourth-year junior who decided to test the NFL waters after graduating rather than stick around for a senior year. He only started two seasons for the Sooners, but led the team in tackles during both campaigns. The Senior Bowl invitee and Butkus Award semifinalist seems primed to continue his ascent as one of the highest-upside linebackers in the class, assuming teams aren't afraid of his size.

Strengths: Very active feet and he's always proactively adjusting in coverage. Possesses an easy backpedal that covers ground efficiently. Urgent coming downhill and has an explosive first step. Task-oriented defender who won't let his eyes stray in the run game. Races his way into plays and demonstrates an NFL motor. Controlled mover who takes smart angles. Short-area quickness is fantastic. Willing to throw his body around and be violent with his approach. Intelligent and instinctive player who processes info quickly.

Weaknesses: Tackle radius isn't ideal and it causes some lapses against elusive runners. Doesn't have prototype size. Looks more like a box safety than a traditional inside linebacker. Take-on toughness is there, but he'll get outmuscled too regularly in between the tackles. Takes a while to build up to top speed in space.

Pro Comp: Patrick Queen, Baltimore Ravens -- Asamoah is a bit slower in a straight line than Queen, but he shares great agility and upside. He'll need some help from his linemen to keep lanes clean and ease the transition, but he should be able to start early in his career and develop into a long-term solution at the position.
