Scouting Report |
40 time: 5.38 4th-5th Round Overview: Shaffer was an under-the-radar guard recruit despite being one of the best in Georgia and had to bide his time as a backup. He worked almost exclusively as a reserve during his freshman and sophomore years and his junior season was cut short due to a neck injury. Finally got his chance to start a full year in 2020 but decided to return for a super senior year in 2021. His 2021 campaign proved to be his best as he earned second team all-SEC while starting all 15 games on Georgia's path to the national championship. Strengths: Comfortable in a brawl and has the requisite size and strength to hold his own against heavyweights. Hunts down targets and looks for chances to impose his will in the run game. Good awareness to handle stunts. Transitional quickness from block to block is decent for a big guy. Puts roots down against bull rushers and won't be knocked back on contact. Weaknesses: Size makes it hard for him to make quick adjustments. Loses his balance too often in the run game shuffle. Very heavy feet will take him out of the mix for some teams. Feet stall out once his hands fire and it leads to slipping off blocks. Lower body flexibility is average. Tends to lean too far and get out over his feet. Will need to improve his block sustainability in both the run and pass game. Pro Comp: John Simpson, Raiders - Shaffer is not a scheme versatile player but has the combination of size and strength to stick on a roster. He's an NFL blocker even though it won't always be a pretty operation. |
