Scouting Report |
40 time: 5.20 5th Round Overview: A wonderfully structured guard who earned a Senior Bowl invite to cap off a strong college career, Smith started 37 games during his time with the Hokies. Earned All-ACC Honorable Mention in both 2019 and 2020 while helping support one of the strongest and most consistent offensive lines in the country. He's unlikely to provide tackle value or become an immediate rookie starter, but his traits are impressive for a guard. Strengths: Stoutly built individual. Drives his lower half in the run game and will work his way to finishing defenders. Plays with great balance, knee bend and leverage. Feet and hands work in conjunction and don't get out of sync very often. Punch timing is excellent and he won't fire off too early. Maintains his leverage well through contact. Weaknesses: Agility and body control in space isn't ideal for connecting with and controlling linebackers in the run game. Hand placement isn't consistent and he will swing them wide around the frame. Doesn't have the raw power needed to simply maul opponents. Not quick enough to recover if he makes a mistake. Struggles to adjust urgently with hand fighting. Positioning as a run blocker has too many lapses. Balance tends to fail more later in games. Pro Comp: Nico Siragusa, Free Agent - A major knee injury in his rookie year threw off Siragusa's path and led to a journeyman career, but he was an impressive power blocker coming out of San Diego State. Smith will need to take steps forward from a technical standpoint, but barring injuries he should be able to develop into a starting guard somewhere. |
