Scouting Report

5th Round

Overview: Originally an offensive tackle coming out of high school was kicked inside once he arrived at Oklahoma. By his redshirt sophomore year was starting at left guard and collected 37 starts during his three years as one of the offensive line's road graders. While Hayes isn't the type of guard who's going to fit every scheme, his combination of toughness, anchor, and awareness should help him find a starting job at the NFL level.

Strengths: Great size for the position with a thick upper half. Natural brawler who knows how to throw his weight around in the run game. Good awareness to spot and adapt to stunts. Finisher who will follow up on defenders if they slip. Length looks good and he uses it effectively. Difficult to knock off his platform even when his feet aren't right. Sheer mass makes him a strong person to go through as a pass-rusher.

Weaknesses: Waist bender who compromises his balance and leans too far trying to maintain control. Susceptible to a quality push-pull move, and will need to improve his technical discipline as a pro. Very stiff and clunky athlete overall. Poor hand speed leads to late adjustments with his upper half. Can't recover once he makes a mental mistake with his positioning. Not a scheme versatile type of athlete and blocker.

Pro Comp: Solomon Kindley, Dolphins - Hayes will be able to use his size and power to early success if he is forced into a starting role, but he'll need to become more technically sound if he wants to turn into a player who can't be upgraded from down the line.
