Overview: Calcaterra's professional football path seemed destined to start in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was fresh off a 2018 first-team all-conference selection at Oklahoma and populated the first and second round of mock drafts. In November of 2019, he shockingly announced his retirement from football due to concussions. Calcaterra was about to begin work as an EMT in California, but decided to return to football rather than enter the workforce. He re-emerged at SMU in 2021, looking as athletically impressive as ever on his senior tape. He earned second team all-AAC honors and a Senior Bowl invite after posting 38 receptions for 465 yards during his lone season as a Mustang.
Strengths: Brings vertical speed that can threaten safeties and stretch defenses thin. Broad catch radius will allow him to pluck tough passes. Able to maintain his stride throughout the catch process. Uses his length well as a blocker and won't rely on his chest to handle contact. Frames the ball incredibly well with his hands and demonstrates excellent catching technique. Very sharp with his changes of direction. One of the most natural athletes in the tight end class. Hand usage and overall technical prowess as a receiver is intriguing. Can finish catches through contact if necessary. Makes himself an option when plays break down.
Weaknesses: Comes with notable medical concerns that will need to be thoroughly vetted before he can suit up for the NFL. Lacks the bulk to handle in-line duties. Doesn't have much knockback in his hands. Not a defender mover in the run game. Willingness as a blocker doesn't translate into holding his ground well enough. Loses his balance too easily when push comes to shove.
Pro Comp: Mike Gesicki, Dolphins -- Calcaterra's combination of route-running prowess, natural athletic ability, and ball skills will help him to contribute immediately in an NFL offense, even though he'll likely be constricted to the slot until he can improve his blocking. There aren't many athletes with the tools of folks like Gesicki and Calcaterra, and those few types are in high demand from the league.
