Viewed by some recruiting experts as the top prep prospect in the country when he signed with Michigan out of New Jersey three years ago, Gary played in all 13 games and registering 27 tackles, including five for loss and 0.5 sacks for a squad that would see a school-record 11 players drafted in April 2017.
He enjoyed his finest college season as a sophomore in 2017, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors from league coaches with 66 tackles, including 12 for loss and 6.0 sacks. Constant attention from opponents and a nagging shoulder injury limited Gary to a total of nine games in 2018 and his production slipped (38-6.5-3.5).
Rather than sign with an established agent, the two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree created his own firm - Rashan Gary Sports - as part of the projected top-15 pick's plan to change the game.
Gary has an NFL-caliber frame with impressive overall weight distribution and grown-man strength. Varies his burst off the snap, showing impressive initial quickness and lateral agility for a man of his size when he wants it. Best attribute may be Gary's upper body length and strength as he simply rag-dolls opponents, at times, personifying the coaching expression of "stack and shed" with dynamite sticks for hands.
In addition to remarkable physical tools, Gary is technically sound and competitive, winning the leverage battle at the line of scrimmage by sprawling out his legs to anchor and showing blue collar toughness in the running game. He possesses the strength and size to slide inside on passing downs, giving creative defensive coordinators quite the weapon to create advantageous matchups.
He plays up to his astounding working numbers, generating terrific closing speed which translates into explosive collisions that typically knock ballcarriers to the ground. More than just a heat-seeking missile, Gary's strength, technique and competitiveness help him run through ballcarriers for clean, reliable tackles.
