Among the more appropriately-named prospects in the 2019 NFL Draft, Powers persevered through a lack of scholarship offers out of high school to join the mighty Sooners after spending a year at Butler Community College. Once in Norman, he emerged as one of the more consistent blockers on a unit recognized as the best in all of college football, with Powers often winning on strength and tenacity.
He had to work his way into the Sooners' starting lineup but once he did, Powers never left it, starting the final 38 consecutive games of his career with all but two of them (RG in 2017) coming at left guard. He earned Honorable Mention in first season in Norman, graduating to second-team All-Big 12 honors as a junior and first-team accolades in 2018 as the Sooners' offensive line earned the prestigious Joe Moore Award.
Squatty, powerful interior lineman who shows good core strength, balance and competitiveness to win in a phone booth. He shows adequate initial quickness and good lateral agility to slide laterally to mirror pass rushers. He can create space in the running game with good pad level and leg drive.
His best attribute may very well be his anticipation and timing when working on combo blocks. Powers does a nice job of bringing the fight to defensive tackles at the first level before peeling off to find secondary targets. He shows some nasty in his play, looking to bury opponents when he can.
For many of the same reasons why Powers had to prove his critics wrong when leaving high school, he could prove more popular with the media than teams on draft day. Oklahoma's wide-open offense and dynamic skill-position talent made things easier on all of the Sooners' linemen, with their blockers rarely asked to control opponents for long. He possesses a top-heavy frame that leaves him off-balance and too often on the turf with some ugly snaps against top competition, including Alabama in the 2019 Orange Bowl.
Projection: Seventh Round
