Scouting Report

OVERVIEW

Sweat surprised some recruiting experts when Michigan State lured him out of SEC territory. He flashed while there, recording four tackles - including half a sack - in his college debut (against Jacksonville State) but quickly got himself into head coach Mark Dantonio's doghouse and saw limited little action the rest of his freshman season and into the next year before transferring first to Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Mississippi (where he posted 39 tackles, including six for loss and five sacks) and then to the Bulldogs.

Paired with fellow first-round talent Jeffery Simmons, Sweat led the SEC with 10.5 sacks, including 7.5 (also tops in the conference) against SEC opponents. He was a first-team All-SEC pick for the second consecutive year in 2018 with personal bests in tackles (53) and sacks (12) along with 14.5 tackles for loss.

Sweat had a stellar showing in Mobile and often appeared to be the top talent at the Senior Bowl before dazzling at the scouting combine with his exceptional straight-line speed.

ANALYSIS

Sweat has the build of a prototypical modern-day edge rusher with a rare height, length (35 5/8-inch arms) and a tapered middle with good overall musculature. Twitchy off the snap, showing impressive initial burst for a defender of his size, as well as the knee bend to get low and the core flexibility to tightly scrape the corner without sacrificing speed.

Easy mover with flexible ankles, greasy knees and loose hips to change directions very well for a man of his size. Explosive power paired with rare speed and size. Powerful initial punch to knock would-be blockers opponents onto their heels and drag down ballcarriers.

Sweat can improve by developing more of a plan as a pass rusher, stringing together his moves and showing greater awareness of passing lanes, failing to tip a single pass or kick over his college career...
