After passing by future Hall of Famer Terrell Suggs to officially be the new all-time sack king in college football with 45 career quarterback takedowns, scouts eagerly anticipated seeing Ferguson against top competition at the Senior Bowl.
Though he did register a sack during the game, itself, Ferguson failed to distinguish himself during the week of practice, likely pushing him outside of the top 50 picks his undeniable production.
After he was not allowed to work out at the Combine due to a prior conviction for battery, Ferguson's stock may have further slipped with a disappointing performance at his Pro Day.
While Ferguson has plenty of warts, his production speaks for itself, warranting consideration starting in the middle rounds.
From a physical specimen perspective, Ferguson checks the most important boxes. Albeit against questionable competition, the twitchy, long-limbed pass rusher consistently beat tackles off the ball with his burst. He shows good upper- and lower-body coordination to slap away the reach of opponents while ducking or dipping away, leaving a small target for would-be blockers. Though he performed poorly in timed change-of-direction drills at his Pro Day, on tape Ferguson shows good core flexibility to scrape the corner.
He is too reliant at this time on his feet to run by blockers but flashes strength, including good leg drive for the bull rush. Further, Ferguson has very long arms (34 inches) to lasso ballcarriers, showing good hand-eye coordination to trip up runners seemingly out of his grasp as well as to knock the ball free, forcing seven fumbles over his career.
Critics argue that he plays a finesse brand of football that did not translate well at the Senior Bowl where Ferguson struggled to break free once the top tackles there latched onto him. Too willing to pin his ears back to rush the quarterback, failing to keep contain versus the run. The off-field red-flags which initially had Ferguson ruled ineligible for the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine require thorough vetting.
Projection: Third Round
