| Though listed as a tight end, Smelley played H-back for Alabama and had a breakout senior season after earning a starting spot, catching 34 passes for 356 yards - both second-best on the team - and a team-high four receiving touchdowns for the BCS champion Tide. Though he played in all but one game over the past three seasons, Smelley was used sparingly in the offense aside from blocking before last season, totaling only 20 receptions, 203 yards and no TDs prior to 2011. He received an invitation to the Senior Bowl and impressed in practice, exhibiting excellent hands, good speed and a hard-nosed approach. Though smaller than many NFL tight ends, he has adequate size and is a solid blocker, having played a key role in opening holes for star running back Trent Richardson and Mark Ingram before him. Smelley's best role in the pros could be as a possession receiver in short-yardage situations, as he excels at holding his block before releasing and getting open. He might also be used in a lesser role as a fullback due to his size and blocking abilities. His good hands and versatility may lead to a team taking him in the later rounds. |
