Scouting Report

Among Kentucky's starting five underclassmen turning pro, Jones was a starter for both of his college seasons and averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots. The forward's defensive potential was very much on display during the Wildcats' run to the national championship, as he recorded 10 blocks in the six games - seven in the last three - and added eight steals. Jones' prowess at the defensive end is due to his extremely long arms, which allow him to clog passing lanes in addition to blocking shots. He's also shown a good deal of potential as an offensive player, boasting excellent passing and ballhandling skills, and is extremely versatile as he can score from inside or outside. Jones has the ability to put together huge statistical games, such as a 35-point, eight-rebound performance in a 78-54 win over Auburn on Jan. 11, 2011, or a 27-point, 17-rebound effort in a 76-64 victory over Oklahoma on Nov. 22, 2010. Despite his vast potential, some questions surround Jones. Although he's versatile, he doesn't spend enough time in the post and can linger on the perimeter for extended stretches. While he can make the 3-pointer, he has some mechanical issues with his shot. Observers are divided on whether Jones will prove to be a mismatch or a "tweener" in the NBA, and he seems to lack a mean streak inside. Perhaps the biggest negative Jones will have to deal with in the draft is the perception that he doesn't play hard all the time. Despite those potential negatives, he's simply too talented to be bypassed for very long, and is expected to be a late lottery pick.
