| Though he'll surely be a lottery pick, Jones might go several spots lower from where he would have been selected last year. He somewhat surprisingly returned to Baylor for his sophomore season, even knowing he'd miss the first five games due to an NCAA suspension for accepting improper benefits. Jones was the first preseason Big 12 player of the year in school history after dazzling as a freshman but didn't really build on it, now leaving the Bears despite dips in scoring and shooting percentage. With possibly the biggest potential upside of any draft entry besides Anthony Davis, Jones is a bit of a mystery because his toughness, motor and effort have come into question. There's no doubting he has immense talent as a long-armed big man capable of doing nearly everything well - including ball handling, outside shooting and rebounding - but he does it in spurts. While averaging 13.5 points and 7.6 rebounds as a sophomore, Jones didn't get to the free-throw line much or block many shots for a player with his size, length and leaping ability. A terrific finisher in transition and when blowing by defenders in a set offense, Jones has a strong mid-range game which includes an effective jump hook and even an occasional 3-pointer. Some wonder if his limited production at Baylor was because he often played center, seemingly not a natural fit for a player who could be used at any frontcourt position and maybe even in the backcourt. He'll likely play power forward in the NBA despite having more of a swingman's repertoire. Jones had five career games with at least 25 points but also failed to reach double figures in 16, including two during the Bears' NCAA tournament run to the regional final. |
