Scouting Report

Henson is a long and freakishly athletic player who operates above the rim and always plays with a high motor. The forward averaged career bests of 13.7 points and 9.9 rebounds to go along with 2.9 blocks in 2011-12, then decided to leave for the NBA after his junior season. Henson had eight games with at least 15 rebounds at North Carolina, and his energy, height and explosive leaping ability make him particularly formidable on the offensive glass. He's every bit as good as a defender as he can guard all three frontcourt positions effectively, using his rare combination of quickness and height along with a massive wingspan to create headaches for opponents. Henson's offensive game also boasts a great deal of versatility. He's greatly improved his post-up game and relies heavily on a left-handed hook shot despite being a right-hander. He plants himself in the post using his long legs, which he also uses to full effect in getting separation on turnaround shots and making drop-step moves. He features both a soft touch and power around the rim in finishing plays, and he's ideally suited to the pick-and-roll sets that are an offensive staple of many NBA teams. Henson's full offensive potential may not have been on display in college, as he was forced to split touches down low with Tyler Zeller. The biggest question mark surrounding Henson involves his lack of bulk. He'll almost certainly need to strengthen his wiry frame to avoid being pushed around inside in the NBA. Henson's uncommon athleticism also has some talent evaluators wondering what position he's best suited for in the pros. Likely to be compared in style to consensus top overall pick Anthony Davis of Kentucky, Henson is probably too tempting a prospect not to be taken in the lottery.
