Greg Monroe
Team: Georgetown HoyasHeight: 6-11 Born: --
Class-Eligibility: So-SoWeight: 247 Birthplace: New Orleans, LA

Scouting Report

After giving consideration to leaving Georgetown after his freshman season, Monroe's decision to stay an extra year was a smart one, as his improvement was clear from his freshman to sophomore seasons. He raised his scoring average from 12.7 to 16.1 and increased his rebounding average from 6.5 to 9.6. The Big East Conference rookie of the year in 2008-09, Monroe was a third-team AP All-American as a sophomore. The center was picked as the Pete Newell big man of the year, an annual award given to the NCAA's best center. Although Georgetown was upset by Ohio in the first round of the 2010 NCAA tournament, Monroe was outstanding in the Hoyas' run to the Big East tournament championship game. He averaged 19.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists, while shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. Monroe's most memorable performance in 2009-10 may have come in a 79-70 win at Providence on Feb. 9, when he had 12 points and a career-best 12 assists. That assist total was the highest by a center in Big East history and tied for the 10th-best single-game performance in school history. While he had more than respectable scoring and rebounding averages, it is exceptional passing skills that set Monroe apart from the other big men in the draft. Projected as power forward in the NBA, he is also a sound decision-maker with good shooting range, making him something of a non-traditional big man. While not without weaknesses, Monroe's skill set is especially intriguing because he is a left-handed big man with excellent fundamentals. He will need to get more physical and must improve his shot-blocking, but that shouldn't be difficult for someone with his intelligence and overall athletic ability. A lock to be among the top 10 picks, Monroe should be able to make a significant contribution in his rookie season.
