Scouting Report

Pegged as a possible first-round pick after his sophomore season, Thompkins chose not to enter the draft despite being named a unanimous first-team All-SEC pick. While he didn't decimate his stock as a junior, he definitely didn't improve it. An early season ankle sprain may have had something to do with it, but Thompkins didn't take the next step and become one of the nation's dominant big men. His numbers slightly dipped in every major category except shot blocking. The biggest concern is his jump shot. He showed solid range his first two seasons, even knocking down 38.1 percent from 3-point range, but made 31.1 percent from beyond the arc as a junior. There are also conditioning concerns surrounding Thompkins, and scouts wonder if he has a high enough motor to be a regular contributor on a playoff-contending team. He does have good footwork inside and is a solid rebounder but lacks lateral quickness, which hurts his ability to step out and defend good-shooting forwards. A lack of upside could keep Thompkins from being picked late in the first round, but he has enough potential to have a shot at being taken early in the second.
