| After a promising start to 2011-12, Mississippi State's late fade may have hurt Moultrie's stock, but the big man still should be a first-round pick after an impressive junior season in Starkville. He began his collegiate career by posting modest numbers in two seasons at UTEP, but he elevated his game in a big way after transferring. His statistics - 16.4 points per game on 54.9 percent shooting along with 10.5 rebounds - were way up across the board, and he ranked second in the SEC in double-doubles (18) behind likely No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis of Kentucky. Besides his obvious interior contributions, Moultrie showed impressive touch by shooting 78.0 percent on free throws, and the power forward even hit 8 of 18 from 3-point range. His arrival was a big reason the Bulldogs rose as high as 15th in the rankings, but as they were losing seven of their final nine games, Moultrie publicly called out some of his teammates. Mississippi State eventually missed the NCAA tournament and lost to Massachusetts in the first round of the NIT in double overtime despite 34 points from Moultrie. A better finish may have pushed Moultrie into the lottery, but he's a sure first-rounder anyway given his combination of size and athleticism. Those attributes have translated to huge productivity on the offensive glass and solid all-around defense, although he hasn't blocked shots at the rate his length and agility might suggest. Still, a big man as explosive as Moultrie is a relatively rare commodity, and he has the potential to develop into a powerful presence in the pros. |
