Scouting Report

McGowens drew interest from Georgia, Michigan, Oregon and Florida State, but elected to head to Nebraska to play alongside his brother, Trey. A five-star recruit, he was the Cornhuskers' highest ranked recruit in the recruiting database era.
The 6-foot-7 guard took on a massive role in his only season of college basketball, starting in 31 games and going on to be named Big Ten Newcomer of the Year.
He averaged 16.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and shot 40.3 percent from the field. McGowens scored 522 points, the most in a single season by a freshman in program history.
Strengths: Has a lot of potential as a scorer. Can create his own shot after putting the ball on the floor. Is elusive in traffic, finding a way to make contested shots. Not afraid to drive the lane. Strong ball-handler. Has a lot of bounce and is very athletic, allowing him to play above the rim effortlessly. Confident in fastbreak situations and can only improve as he continues to develop.
Weaknesses: Currently 180 pounds, so could benefit from bulking up. Needs more foundational strength. Sometimes had questionable shot selection. Has the tools to develop into a good shooter, but needs to be more efficient, especially from 3-point range. Would sometimes play iso ball, neglecting open teammates. Lackluster assist-to-turnover ratio at Nebraska (1.4/2.1). Struggles on the defensive end, particularly inside the perimeter. Must learn to defend without fouling. Does not seem to have defensive intensity. Tends to disappear during games where he is not scoring often.
