Scouting Report
| Griffin averaged 10.4 points per game in his one season for the Blue Devils. More than half of his 405 points came via his 71 baskets from 3-point range. That's not to say that he's one-dimensional, though the 44.7-percent shooting on 3s is bound to catch everyone's attention as that was the second-best mark for a Duke freshman in program history. |
| He had a slow start to the season as he was coming off an injury, but made a pretty dynamic impact once he got up to speed. He moved into the starting lineup for 25 games. He's listed at 6-foot-6 on a sturdy 222-pound frame. He arrived at Duke on a likely one-year plan as long as injuries didn't interfere. |
| He's the son of former NBA player Adrian Griffin, who's an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors. |
| Strengths: He's body is ready-made for the NBA, with a somewhat freakish upper body for a player at his guard position. He'll need to use some of that strength on the pro level and it might help him get to the free-throw line more often. He's not afraid to use his body, demonstrating that by ranking fourth on Duke's team in total rebounds. It's easy to see how he could play on the wing in the NBA and be a difficult matchup, particularly because of his pure shooting stroke. He's still so young that it's possible that his game could develop in areas other than relying on shooting to separate from others. |
| Weaknesses: He needs to work on his flexible because his mobility at times looks a bit on the awkward side. While it's something that can probably be improved, his leaping ability isn't overwhelming. There's also the notion that because he wasn't the primary offensive option for Duke that he might not have received a full dose of aggressive defense played against him. He seemed to have the tag of an "instant offense" type of option, but there will have to be more to accompany that in the NBA. |
