| The No. 1 recruit in the 2021 class picked Duke over closer-to-home options in Washington state and helped re-establish the Blue Devils with a Final Four run. |
| Described by Mike Krzyzewski as advanced, Coach K also noted during the trip to New Orleans that Banchero's distinguishing trait isn't size or range for the position. It's the in-development finisher's will he's seen in few others, namely Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Grant Hill. |
| Banchero measured at 6-10 in socks before the draft and at 250 pounds has the versatility to be an NBA forward or center because of his knack for scoring as a shooter or with his back to the basket. |
| Not out of the conversation for the No. 1 overall pick, Banchero is a near lock for a top-5 spot and can help most lottery teams instantly. |
| Strengths: Playmaking mentality and "feed me" mindset without forcing shots or overdribbling on the perimeter. Smooth release and timing on his jumper out to 19 or 20 feet with the form and lift to develop a consistent NBA 3-point shot. Footwork is polished, controlled and gets up off of two feet with explosiveness. Can score through contact with either hand. Soft touch noteworthy inside of 12 feet and on putbacks. Wingspan over 7 feet and can climb to deflect and swat shots as a help defender. Thrives in isolation with counters and impressive handle for his size. |
| Weaknesses: Outmuscled in some big, late-game moments. Focus and conditioning were questioned last season. Made 73 percent from free-throw line, below expectations considering his smooth shooting form and range. Defensive intensity comes in flashes, but scouts have seen enough to believe he can handle defending on the block. Limited laterally and second-jump explosiveness lacking for a lead scorer. Matches up best as a 5 because of limitations, offensive skill set of a stretch 4. |
