Scouting Report
| In two seasons at Purdue, Ivey proved almost every pro-level skill scouts could want to see from a top-five prospect and upside to boot. He can go left or right, finish through contact, get to the line, take and make money shots and defend on and off the ball. One question hovers over his final draft grade: Can he shoot? |
| Ivey can shoot, of course, but his cool streaks and needed mechanical tweaks to eliminate robotic tendencies that show on occasion are the major knock on a player some see as a potential Dwyane Wade-type of prospect, while others see parallels with Donovan Mitchell. Wade's scouting report out of Marquette included lines such as "short for a shooting guard" and "streaky but confident shooter." |
| Strengths: Gets downhill in a blink and has the explosive first step to cause defensive breakdowns on pick-and-rolls, isolation and pump-and-go situations from the perimeter. Excellent endline-to-endline speed. Elite athleticism and a combination of bounce and basketball savvy to get in most any lineup immediately. Pure form to rise and release with impeccable timing. Hangs above defenders to float and finish. Hops to score amongst the trees and be a factor on offense and defense at multiple positions. Creative scorer. Finds lanes and might be too unselfish for his own skillset. Picks through traffic and has the handle to split and score. Dogged defender can disrupt passing lanes and get the ball off the glass. Quick, active hands on the ball and vision to anticipate and crash passing lanes one or two passes away. Top grades for intensity and instincts. Ascending talent. Hard worker wants nothing given. Only 20 years old. |
| Weaknesses: When confidence goes or Ivey's shot isn't there, he's quick to defer. When he doesn't enter table-setter persona, can struggle to get buckets in long stretches. Perimeter shot isn't as textbook and he lacks the confidence of a deadeye shooter at the moment. The right situation and coaching staff can get him there. Not a natural playmaker in terms of projections to point guard, but tools to get there. Shooting on the move when he can't get to the rim has been inconsistent. |
