Scouting Report
| Williams played two seasons for Duke, making a huge impression late in his freshman season and then carrying that into his sophomore campaign. There are projections that suggest he could be selected in the middle of the first round. |
| He can make an impact on the defensive end and was rewarded with that by being selected as the Defensive Player of the Year in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He takes pride in his shot-blocking abilities. |
| His sister, Elizabeth Williams, also attended Duke and is a veteran WNBA player. |
| Strengths: At 7-foot-1, he'll arrive with the reputation as a rim protector and that's something that he could live up to. He's going to make solid decisions with the ball based on his 72.1-percent shooting percentage. The amount of improvement he made since early in his freshman season is reason to believe that he could end up performing at a high level if he continues on that trajectory. So far, it's clear that he'll be fine with fitting into a certain role and then try to flourish in that capacity, so there are traits that he'll be a strong teammate. |
| Weaknesses: Despite his height, he's not always a huge offensive presence. He was in Duke's starting lineup for all 39 games, averaging 11.2 points per game. Of his 191 field goals, more than half came as a result of his 97 dunks. With so many of his baskets from close to the basket, he didn't develop much range. There wasn't a significant need for his offensive to flourish in other ways on the Duke team, but he'll have to find ways to be a threat. He could be slotted for a role that won't allow him to gain much versatility, and he might need to add some bulk to contend with some of the NBA's big bodies. |
