OVERVIEW |
The player who goes by "Bones" could move up a few notches on the draft list after a stellar performance at the NBA combine. |
Hyland showed off his 3-point range and routinely shot from well from behind the line to show NBA teams he is a ready-made long-range artist. He made 69 3-pointers for the Rams last season and 132 in two seasons. |
Hyland averaged 19.5 points and 4.7 rebounds last season while winning Atlantic 10 Player of the Year honors. He will be a capable scorer off the bench as a rookie and should eventually compete to be a starting shooting guard. |
Hyland, who turns 21 in September, averaged just 2.1 assists but part of that is because he didn't have a lot of help offensively. He hoisted 340 shots in 24 games, so he wasn't looking to dish once the ball arrived in his hands. |
His slight frame will initially be a problem and Hyland will need to put on some pounds to deal with the physical pounding that takes place during an NBA season. |
He should find his place as a defender though bigger shooting guards may initially cause him problems. Hyland did notch 45 steals last season. |
ANALYSIS |
Positives: Hyland's 3-point shooting range is impressive and he will make an immediate impact as a shooter. He is used to being the best player on his team and won't back down against the rise in competition. Hyland's defensive abilities will create turnovers. |
Negatives: There is a reason why he earned the nickname "Bones" so expect him to be spending a lot of time in the weight room as a rookie. His passing skills will need to be developed as he will surely be asked to play some point guard. Guarding bigger guards will be challenging early in his career. |
