Scouting Report
| At 7-0 and 295 pounds, Cockburn fits the mold of a classic big man. He led the Fighting Illini to heights they hadn't scaled for about 15 years, helping them earn a No. 1 seed in 2021 and the Big Ten regular season title last year. |
| Cockburn averaged 20.9 points and 10.6 rebounds last year, converting 59.3 percent of his field goal attempts despite double and triple-teams inside. He also made slight improvements in foul shooting, foul rate and passing. |
| Strengths: Cockburn knows who he is and doesn't try to do too much offensively. You won't see him hanging around the 3-point arc, jacking up needless 22-footers. He works inside to get prime scoring position and has made improvements offensively. He's showed decent touch in an eight-foot radius around the goal and has occasionally mixed in jump hooks and bank shots. But power is his focus. He would just as soon dunk over (and through you) as he would flip up a short jumper. Cockburn can control the boards on both ends and draws gobs of fouls. |
| Weaknesses: In the pros, Cockburn could be somewhat limited on offense without even a decent go-to move. He shot only 62.3 percent at the line in three years at Illinois, making him a late-game liability. His assist rate isn't exactly going to remind one of Nikola Jokic, either. On defense, Cockburn isn't an elite shot-blocker and can also struggle when tasked with guarding the pick-and-roll. Cockburn might not hear his name called on draft night and will have work to do to make an NBA roster despite his clear physical ability. |
