NBA Draft

Usman Garuba

Scouting Report

OVERVIEW
Garuba is viewed as a player who will help immediately on the defensive end, while his offensive game will take time to develop.
Garuba, who turned 19 in March, averaged 4.0 points and 4.1 rebounds in 38 games in his second season in the EuroLeague. He shot 50.4 percent from the field and recorded 27 blocked shots and 23 steals.
Garuba also has three seasons of experience playing for Real Madrid in Liga ACB and has also seen action for the Spanish national team at the U16 and U18 levels, beginning at age 14.
His reported 7-foot-3 wingspan aids his defensive efforts and allows him to guard taller players. He also has stood out as a passer.
Garuba will need to improve his shooting, particularly from long range, as he enters the NBA. He was just 11 of 40 (27.5 percent) from 3-point range against EuroLeague competition this season and was slightly better at 33.8 percent (24 of 71) in 36 games this season against ACB clubs.
Garuba's athleticism makes him an intriguing player and he should carve out a role with a team pretty quickly just based on his defensive skills.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Standout defensive player who can guard multiple spots. That impressive wingspan prompts visions of being a strong shot-blocker down the line. Has two seasons of EuroLeague experience, which has allowed him to be judged against players who are the best in Europe.
Negatives: Not a strong offensive player and needs to improve his shooting mechanics. His 3-point shooting was below par against European competition and will have to be better in the NBA. He is a bit of a tweener as in viewed as too small to guard NBA centers and not skilled enough to regularly check power forwards.
