NBA Draft

Jonathan Kuminga

Scouting Report

OVERVIEW
Kuminga headed to the G-League last season instead of playing high-level college basketball, so he might not be as familiar to hoops fans as many others in the draft. But scouts certainly know about him after he averaged 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 13 games at the professional level.
ANALYSIS
Positives: Kuminga is a great athlete with an enormous wingspan of 7 feet. At minimum, he can develop into a strong defender on the wing, and he shows plenty of potential to blossom into a good offensive player. He should continue to get better as he gains muscle and experience. A native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he moved to the United States in 2016 and quickly has established himself as a high-end talent.
Negatives: Kuminga likely has the biggest "boom or bust" potential in the top five picks. Yes, he has the build, the athleticism and the work ethic to blossom into an All-Star. However, he shot only 38.7 percent overall last season, including 24.6 percent from beyond the arc, and those numbers will need to improve for Kuminga to fulfill his potential. Is an NBA team willing to spend a top-five pick on a player with an iffy shot?
