| Rivers' pedigree, size and vast potential should make him very much in demand for potential employers as he enters the guard-oriented NBA. The son of former star guard and current Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, Austin decided to leave Duke after one season in which he averaged 15.5 points. He plays with confidence and swagger that were on display Feb. 8 as he delivered a 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat North Carolina 85-84, a shot that's certain to live on as one of the greatest in that storied rivalry. Rivers is something of a combo guard, as he is an excellent ball-handler who can run the offense and pick-and-rolls, but also possesses the aggressive mentality of a pure scoring guard. Though lacking the prototypical height of an NBA shooting guard, he has extremely long arms that should help him get his shot off and defend bigger players effectively. Rivers boasts the same shifty, deceptively quick moves and ability to separate from defenders that his father relied on during a 13-year NBA career. He gets excellent elevation on his jumper and can hit from anywhere on the floor. Many talent evaluators, however, believe Rivers would have benefited greatly from another season in college. He often appeared raw last season as he sometimes struggled with shot selection and other areas of his game, such as decision-making and movement away from the ball. There's also the concern that his extreme confidence can lead to him playing selfishly. The lack of college experience could prove to hinder him as a pro, but it could also simply lengthen his development into an effective NBA player. Rivers is likely to be a mid-first round selection. |
