Rockies 1B Helton resting following hip surgery
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Colorado first baseman Todd Helton underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, bringing an end to a disappointing season for the Rockies slugger.
Helton has struggled offensively since injuring his hip in June. He missed 12 games while on the disabled list in July and was hitting a career-low .238 when Colorado put him back on the DL Monday.
Helton, a five-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove winner and the franchise leader in almost every major offensive category, has said he plans to return for the final season of the two-year, $9.9 million extension he signed in March 2010.
The slugger, who turns 39 on Aug. 20, has 354 career home runs but only seven this season.
