Pirates place OF Presley on DL with concussion

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Alex Presley on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion and recalled Jordy Mercer from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Presley injured himself while attempting to make a diving catch in Tuesday's 8-7 victory over Houston. Presley stayed in the game briefly before complaining of neck pain and whiplash. Manager Clint Hurdle spoke to Presley on Thursday before deciding Presley needed extra time to recover.

Presley is hitting .242 with six homers and 13 RBI in 60 games this season while working mostly in the leadoff spot for the Pirates, who began play on Thursday in first place in the National League Central.

Mercer is 1 for 9 in five games with Pittsburgh this season.
