Padres reinstate Stauffer; Hermida to have surgery

WASHINGTON (AP) Right-hander Tim Stauffer was reinstated from the disabled list by the San Diego Padres so he could make his season debut by starting against the Washington Nationals on Monday night.

Stauffer has been on the disabled list all season with a strained right elbow. He is 23-31 with a 3.92 ERA in 95 appearances, including 69 starts, over six seasons with the Padres.

To make room on the 25-man roster, the Padres optioned left-hander Josh Spence to Triple-A Tucson. Spence went 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA in 11 appearances, all as a reliever, for the Padres this season.

Manager Bud Black said outfielder Jeremy Hermida is scheduled to undergo sports hernia surgery on Tuesday and will be out up to six weeks. Hermida went on the 15-day disabled list in late April.

He hit .250 with two RBIs in 13 games this season.
