Yankees shut down P Pineda with shoulder weakness

BOSTON (AP) The New York Yankees shut down right-hander Michael Pineda after he felt weakness in his shoulder during an extended spring training game on Saturday.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi says Pineda only lasted 15 pitches before stopping.

He will see a doctor in Tampa before the team determines how to proceed.

Pineda has been out since experiencing discomfort in the back of the shoulder during a spring training start on March 30. He has been diagnosed with tendon inflammation in his right shoulder.

Also Saturday, Girardi said Andy Pettitte would probably make his next start in Double-A Trenton and be limited to 80-85 pitches. He would have one or two more minor league starts after that.

Pineda was acquired in the offseason trade that sent catcher Jesus Montero to Seattle.
