Angels call up RHP David Carpenter

NEW YORK (AP) The Los Angeles Angels have purchased the contract of right-hander David Carpenter from Triple-A Salt Lake and optioned utilityman Alexi Amarista to the minors to help their beleaguered bullpen.

The 24-year-old Carpenter joined the Angels for the start of their three-game series Friday against the New York Yankees. His first appearance will mark his major league debut.

The Angels moved outfielder Jeremy Moore from the 15- to the 60-day disabled list.

Carpenter was promoted to help a bullpen that couldn't hold leads against Minnesota on Wednesday and Thursday, sending the Angels to a 2-4 start.

Top reliever Scott Downs bruised his right ankle Thursday when he was stepped on while covering first base. General manager Jerry Dipoto said Friday that Downs will not have to go on the disabled list.
