Cards' Adam Wainwright aims to get back on track vs. Pirates

According to STATS
According to STATS

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals

  1. Over the last six seasons, the Cardinals are 64-35 (.646) against the Pirates and have outscored them, 501-384. That is the fourth-best record among NL teams against a single divisional opponent in that span, behind the Dodgers (vs. Padres and Rockies) and Braves (vs. Marlins).
  2. The Pirates completed their fourth series sweep of the season on Wednesday against the Reds and are one victory shy of their longest winning streak of the season, which they've accomplished twice. Last season, Pittsburgh had zero series sweeps for the entire season.
  3. Johan Oviedo allowed three hits over 7.0 scoreless IP in his last start, matching the longest outing of his career. He'll be making his first appearance against the Cardinals since they traded him to Pittsburgh on August 2.
  4. The Cardinals have lost six of their last nine games, a stretch during which they're averaging 2.89 runs and are last in the majors with a .201 team batting average.
  5. Paul Goldschmidt has gone 17 games without a home run, one shy of his longest drought of the season (April 7-28). However, he's reached base safely in all 11 games against the Pirates this season with a pair of four-hit efforts and a .452/.558/.857 slash line, four homers and 11 RBI.
  6. Oneil Cruz has posted four straight multi-hit games for the first time in his career, going 10-for-19 (.526) with five runs scored. The only rookie Pirates shortstop to have a longer multi-hit streak is Dick Groat, who did so in seven straight games in 1952.
Notes Applicable For Series Dates: 9/30/2022 thru 10/5/2022

Adam Wainwright will try to reverse his late-season fade Sunday when the St. Louis Cardinals attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cardinals (92-66) posted 2-1 and 13-3 wins over the Pirates (59-99) in the first two games of the series.

"This team needs me to pitch well if we're going to win the World Series; I really need to be a part of it," Wainwright said. "I'm frustrated. The stuff is not great."

Wainwright (11-11, 3.51 ERA) has allowed four runs in four of his five starts this month. In his most recent outing, a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers last Sunday, he lasted just three innings and yielded four runs on six hits and three walks.

Wainwright opted not to skip a start to refresh his arm, but he got extra days of rest ahead of this Sunday's game.

"All I know how to do is keep going," Wainwright said. "That's all I know how to do. The only way I don't come out of this is if I give up."

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol believes Wainwright will get back on track and earn his spot in the postseason rotation.

"There are a couple of things that we've identified that he wants to work on that will get him in a better position to get some of the velo back," Marmol said. "Just mechanically speaking. So he'll do that over the next several days and then take another shot at it. Everyone is fairly optimistic."

Wainwright is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two starts against the Pirates this season and 23-7 with a 3.59 ERA in 49 career outings (43 starts) vs. Pittsburgh. He has dominated Ke'Bryan Hayes (0-for-13, three strikeouts) and Ben Gamel (1-for-14, six strikeouts).

This will be the last regular-season game for the Cardinals' Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina at home, and the team will honor them in pregame ceremonies.

Pujols and Molina have said this will be their final season. Pujols is going out with a flourish that included his 701st career homer Friday and a two-run single on Saturday.

"I think we're seeing one of the best hitters of our generation," Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. "He's had an unbelievable second half. You cannot make mistakes to him right now. ... What he's done over the course of his career, and especially what he's done over this second half, is extremely special."

Right-hander Roansy Contreras (5-5, 3.72 ERA) will start Sunday's game for Pittsburgh.

He received a no-decision in his last start Monday, allowing two runs on two hits in four innings against the Cincinnati Reds.

Contreras is 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA in three appearances against the Cardinals this season, including two starts. Corey Dickerson (2-for-4, double, two RBIs), Paul Goldschmidt (2-for-5, two doubles), Nolan Arenado (2-for-6) and Tommy Edman (2-for-6) have had some success against him.

Pujols has not faced Contreras.

The Pirates adjusted their bullpen midway through the series, promoting former Cardinals reliever Junior Fernandez from Triple-A Indianapolis. He replaced Wil Crowe, who will finish the season on the injured list due to elbow inflammation.
