Analysis: Axford could replace Chris Perez, who was released on Oct. 31 following a turbulent season with the club. The 30-year-old Axford, who finished last season in St. Louis, is expected to undergo medical exams in the next few days and as long as there are no issues, he'll close for the Indians in 2014.

Analysis: Axford was a combined 7-7 with a 4.45 ERA for Milwaukee and St. Louis last season, but he was 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA after the Cardinals acquired him in a late-August trade. He made six appearances in the postseason and allowed a run in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out nine.

The 30-year-old Axford is expected to join the Cardinals on Friday night when they begin a seven-game road trip in Pittsburgh.
Analysis: St. Louis general manager John Mozeliak calls Axford "a reliever that offers experience as both a setup man and closer. He's also a pitcher who brings familiarity with the NL Central, pennant-race baseball and the postseason." Axford is 6-7 this season with a 4.45 ERA and 19 saves in 62 games. He led the NL with 46 saves in 2011 while helping the Brewers to the NL Central title.
