Analysis: He had held the Diamondbacks to one run in 6 2/3 innings five days earlier to get a win, but this time Richard didn't have his best stuff. "I don't know if it was so much command for him as much it was just not a lot of sink," San Diego manager Andy Green said. "It kind of forced him to pitch on the edge of the zone. I through he was a little flatter than usual."

Analysis: Richard has pitched at least six innings in all four of his starts, but he lost the previous two as he allowed a combined nine runs and four homers. He also walked five in those defeats, something he mentioned being the key Thursday in a pregame talk with his catcher. "I told Austin (Hedges) before the game that I wanted to throw a lot of strikes and get ahead in the count." Richard said.

Analysis: He's had two remarkably mediocre starts since opening with eight shutout innings against the Dodgers.

He was touched for five singles and two walks.
Analysis: Richard wasn't really on the fantasy radar heading into this season, but that could soon change. "The way Clayton threw the baseball today was outstanding," manager Andy Green said. "He had command of his fastball, and his changeup was as good as I've seen." Maybe it wasn't a fluke considering that after he was signed the Padres in August, he posted a 2.41 ERA in nine starts.
