The left-hander and the team are confident he won't be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Garcia could start early next week in Chicago against the Cubs.
Analysis: Manager Mike Matheny said the replacement for the opener of a four-game series with the Padres will be a minor league call-up. Garcia was injured rounding third base scoring a run in the eighth inning of his last start on June 24 in Miami. The team had previously referred to the injury as a groin cramp. Garcia is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts coming off thoracic outlet surgery to correct a nerve issue in his shoulder that cost him most of the previous two seasons.

Manager Mike Matheny committed to John Lackey starting Wednesday against the White Sox but offered no further details on the St. Louis rotation going forward.
Analysis: Garcia has not thrown a side session since getting hurt running the bases last week against Miami. Matheny didn't say whether he'd be comfortable having Garcia pitch without at least some side work. Garcia is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts coming off thoracic outlet surgery.

Analysis: Garcia allowed one run in seven innings for the Cardinals, lowering his ERA to 1.69. Garcia singled and eventually scored in the eighth, but grimaced and began to limp shortly before crossing the plate. He came out of the game, but afterward Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said it was merely because of a cramp and didn't believe there was reason for concern.
