Analysis: Samardzija improved to 3-2 with a 2.40 ERA in his last nine starts. ''He's a horse,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''That's obviously part of the deal, what intrigued us about him, his stuff and how strong he is. He's really good, throwing the ball well right now, all his pitches locating. Gave us what we needed.'''

Analysis: Samardzija appeared headed for his first win since Aug. 26, until the bullpen gave up two runs in the ninth. The right-hander makes his next start Thursday in San Diego. In his previous start on Sept. 12, Samardzija gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings in a 4-0 loss to the Padres.

Analysis: Not a terrible outing but one that quickly went south when Hector Sanchez homered in the sixth. It was only the second home run allowed by Samardzija in his last seven starts ''The two-run homer put a sour taste in my mouth with the way things were,'' Samardzija said. ''I left a splitter a little bit up in the zone and (Sanchez) was able to put a barrel on the ball.''

Analysis: It was a solid bounce-back effort for Samardzija, who was pulled after allowing three runs in four innings at Wrigley Field five days earlier. Despite that outing, Samardzija has a 2.45 ERA in his last six starts while holding opponents to a .211 average. His next scheduled start is Monday against San Diego, and he's 6-1 with a 3.29 ERA versus the Padres.

The right-hander had a no-hit bid broken up by Curtis Granderson's leadoff double in the seventh, then allowed a two-run homer to Yoenis Cespedes that provided the difference in New York's 2-0 win.
Analysis: The positive news is that Samardzija, who finished with seven strikeouts, has now turned in three solid starts after really struggling for much of the summer. He's posted a 2.41 ERA and yielded just 12 hits over those three outings and gets an easier assignment next time out when Atlanta visits AT&T Park on Friday.

Both pitchers will be making their second start since the All-Star break. Samardzija did not get a decision in a 7-6, 10-inning loss at San Diego on July 16, and Cueto took the loss in a 5-3 defeat to the Padres the following day.
