The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement. The Tigers played at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.
Analysis: Johnson had a major league-best 51 saves for Baltimore in 2012, and then tied for the big league lead last year with 50. The Orioles traded him to Oakland last winter, and he wasn't able to regain his form with the Athletics. The 31-year-old right-hander was 4-2 with a 7.14 ERA in 38 games with the A's. Johnson was designated for assignment on July 24 and released the following week.

Johnson, acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles, was 4-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 38 games with the A's.
Analysis: Johnson faltered early, blowing his first two chances before losing his job. He allowed four runs on three hits without retiring a batter in Wednesday night's 9-7 victory over the Astros. Johnson led the AL in saves in each of the past two seasons, with 50 last year and 51 in 2012.

Manager Bob Melvin couldn't afford to wait while the former Orioles closer got into a groove, removing him from that role on Thursday.
Analysis: He's allowed at least two runs in three of his five appearances, his seven total runs allowed is tied for the most in the AL among relievers. He's allowed more walks and hits than any other reliever in the league. You should dump Johnson immediately and find a new fantasy closer.

Analysis: Johnson was tagged for three runs and three hits in two-thirds of an inning. While Johnson also took the loss in Monday's 2-0 defeat after allowing both runs in the ninth, he doesn't appear to be in danger of losing his job just yet.
