This was the third minor league start for Garza, who missed the last part of the 2012 season with an elbow injury. Analysis: Garza, who hasn't pitched in a big league game since July 21, gave up three hits, struck out two and walked two against Birmingham in the Southern League game. He also made a diving catch of a bunt attempt. Garza said he threw each of his different pitches and that ``everything felt good.'' |

Analysis: Cubs manager Dale Sveum told the team's website that the right- will likely miss the first month of the season. Garza is 15-17 with a 3.52 ERA in 49 starts being acquired by the Cubs in January 2011. Elbow troubles limited him to 18 starts in 2012. |

A week after feeling a twinge in his left side while throwing batting practice, Garza said Sunday that he's progressing and getting better. He says there is just a "little spot that's annoying." Manager Dale Sveum says the problem is "very slight" and that Garza gets better every day. Analysis: The pitcher was limited to 18 starts in 2012 because of an elbow injury. He was going through his most extensive work since last July when he felt something a week ago. Garza wore a bulky wrap around his midsection in the Cubs clubhouse Sunday. He isn't sure when he will throw again, but hopes to in the next few days. |

Analysis: Garza felt a twinge in his side on Sunday, when he faced batters for the first time since last July. He underwent an MRI on Monday which revealed a "mild strain" in his side. General manager Jed Hoyer said Garza must be pain free before he does any more throwing. Hoyer called the diagnosis good news and said Garza is in good spirits. He went 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA last season, but didn't make any starts after July 21 because of an elbow issue. |
