Analysis: The 31-year-old Moylan has appeared in 80 or more games in three of the last five seasons. He missed most of last season because of back surgery before needing another surgery for a torn rotator cuff and labrum. Moylan is 19-9 with a 2.60 ERA in his career.

Analysis: He tweeted that his upcoming surgery is more of a cleanup than a total repair of the shoulder. That should reduce the recovery time to about six months, instead of most or all of the 2012 season. A ground-ball specialist, Moylan already has missed most of this season after surgery for a bulging disc in his back. Moylan previously had ligament replacement surgery in his elbow, knocking him out for most of 2008.

Analysis: Moylan says the operation won't end his season. He says he has been told the recovery could take eight to 12 weeks. The operation is tentatively planned for Tuesday in Los Angeles, to be done by spine surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins. Moylan was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 16 with a lower back sprain. The right-hander from Australia began the season as the Braves' top setup reliever. He was 6-2 with a 2.97 ERA in 2010.
