The rest of the day didn't go so well. Domonic Brown and John Mayberry Jr. hit consecutive home runs off reliever Rob Carson to break open a close game, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat New York 9-4 on Saturday to give Jonathan Pettibone his first major league win.
Analysis: Activated from the disabled list before the game, Marcum was pulled for pinch-hitter Justin Turner in the fourth as the Mets tried to convert a scoring chance. Turner struck out looking, and Carson gave up five runs the following inning. Marcum (0-1) went four innings after beginning the season on the DL with a neck injury and right biceps tendinitis. The 31-year-old right-hander signed a $4 million, one-year contract in January.

Marcum has not pitched in a spring training game since March 16. The newcomer complained of neck discomfort during a bullpen session Monday and is taking anti-inflammatory medication.
Analysis: Marcum missed a start last week because of a shoulder impingement that required a cortisone injection. He has a 4.66 ERA this spring in 9 2-3 innings. The Mets have not said they will put Marcum on the disabled list. They could backdate his injury nine days, making him eligible to pitch April 7 at home against Miami. The Mets plan to use only four pitchers the first time through the rotation. They open at home on Monday against San Diego.
