The move comes one day after he allowed six runs over 4 2/3 innings in a 6-5 loss to Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Cain has struggled most of the season at the back end of San Francisco's rotation. He is 4-8 with a 5.81 ERA in 17 starts. The three-time All-Star has already missed 43 games this season during two previous stints on the disabled list because of a strained right hamstring.

Analysis: Giants manager Bruce Bochy didn't announce whether he'll use Monday's day off to skip Cain's spot in the rotation for next week's series against the Dodgers, but Cain is aware of the possibility. ''It would be hard for me,'' said Cain, tagged for 11 runs in 8 2/3 innings in his last two starts. "Those are big games in LA and they are the games you look forward to and compete in."

Analysis: Cain, who fell to 1-6 with a 5.88 ERA in 12 starts, was coming off his second DL stint for a right hamstring strain. Despite the ugly numbers Wednesday, Cain said, ''It felt like it was coming out (of my hand) fine, just had some errant ones. I had a lot of positives."
