McCarthy sustained what was described at the time as life-threatening injuries when he was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar. Analysis: The Diamondbacks' right-hander underwent extensive examinations at the Mayo Clinic after the incident Monday. He was having dinner with his wife at a Phoenix restaurant when he passed out. McCarthy says he knew that after a traumatic brain injury a person is more susceptible to seizures. He says he will be taking the anti-seizure medicine for the foreseeable future. |

Analysis: McCarthy (1-3, 4.74 ERA) struck out five and walked two while throwing 68 of 99 pitches for strikes in his third career shutout, first since Sept. 3, 2011, against Seattle. McCarthy was hit in the head by an Erick Aybar line drive on Sept 5. 2012, against the Angels while with Oakland. He suffered a skull fracture and underwent surgery to end his season. He signed a two-year deal with Arizona in December and went winless in his first eight starts with his new club. |
