Giants general manager Brian Sabean announced during a conference call Monday that Scutaro had the fusion procedure performed by Dr. Michael Wang in Miami on Friday to alleviate the troublesome area at level L-2/L-3 of his spine. It will be four-to-six months before doctors determine whether Scutaro can play baseball again.
Analysis: The 39-year-old Scutaro, the 2012 NL Championship Series MVP, played in only five games last season because of recurring back problems. He is now resting at home and will soon begin the long rehabilitation program post-surgery.

Analysis: The 38-year-old infielder, who played a pivotal role in San Francisco's march toward the 2012 World Series championship, has not played this season because of a lower back strain. He rejoined the team prior to Friday night's game against Arizona. Scutaro took batting practice with his teammates and sat in on a hitter's meeting before being activated to San Francisco's 25-man roster.
