Analysis: Wells' last win came Sept. 20, 2009, when he beat the Marlins 8-1 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. He pitched seven innings of five-hit ball that day, and he was just as effective Sunday against the Rockies. Wells (1-1, 1.50 ERA) allowed just six hits, walked two and struck out two in his longest outing since his last win. The Padres signed Wells to a minor league contract May 7, and he was 1-4 with a 4.97 ERA in seven starts for Tucson. He was called up Tuesday.

The deal was announced Saturday, two weeks before Wells' 35th birthday.
Analysis: Wells hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2009 for Cincinnati, his eighth team over 11 seasons in a career that started with the White Sox from 1999-2001. Chicago picked Wells 16th overall in 1998 out of Baylor. He made his major league debut the following year going 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA in seven starts. His career record is 67-99 with a 4.71 ERA in 289 games for the White Sox, Pittsburgh, Texas, St. Louis, Colorado, Kansas City, Washington and Cincinnati.
