Analysis: Penny takes the spot of Shane Loux, placed on the 15-day disabled list after he strained his neck during a workout Thursday. He underwent an MRI exam Friday that revealed the injury. |

Analysis: Penny, who briefly pitched for the Giants down the down the stretch in 2009 and went 4-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts, is scheduled to report to extended spring training in Arizona on Monday. He threw a bullpen session Friday afternoon at AT&T Park for Giants general manager Brian Sabean, manager Bruce Bochy and pitching coach Dave Righetti. The 33-year-old Penny went 11-11 with a 5.30 ERA in 31 starts last season for Detroit. |
