Analysis: McDonald adds depth all over the infield and gives Boston an experienced glove for the stretch drive. The AL East leaders announced the deal Saturday night during a game against the Chicago White Sox.

Analysis: The 38-year-old McDonald was acquired from Pittsburgh on June 10 and played in eight games with Cleveland. Francona says if McDonald can't find another team to play for, he would be welcome to stay in the Indians organization.

Analysis: The Indians reacquired the 38-year utility infielder from Pittsburgh on Monday. He was sent to the Indians after the Pirates recalled him from a rehab assignment and activated him from the 15-day disabled list. Since playing the first six seasons of his career from 1999-2004, McDonald has since played for Toronto, Detroit, Arizona and Pittsburgh. He was only 2-for-31 in 16 games for the Pirates this season, and is a career .240 hitter.

Analysis: The trade came two days after Pirates backup shortstop Chase d'Arnaud, injured in a rundown drill earlier, had surgery for a torn ligament in his left thumb. He is expected to be sidelined six to eight weeks. The 38-year-old McDonald hit .249 in six homers and 22 RBIs in 70 games for Arizona last season and gives the Pirates an experienced reserve for regular shortstop Clint Barmes.
