San Francisco promoted the 41-year-old right-hander from Double-A Richmond before Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Analysis: Nathan was a sixth-round pick of the Giants in 1995 and began his career as a starter before moving to the bullpen. But after struggling in the 2003 playoffs, Nathan was dealt along with left-hander Francisco Liriano to Minnesota for catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

He's attempting to extend his major league career after his second Tommy John surgery in 2015. Nathan will report to the Giants' Double-A team in Richmond.
Analysis: Nathan, who spent the first four seasons of his major league career with the Giants, has pitched only two innings this season and was released by the Cubs. Closer Santiago Casilla's job probably is safe but Nathan, who has 377 saves, could provide help in middle relief or in a set-up role.

Analysis: The 41-year-old hasn't pitched in the majors since blowing out his elbow with Detroit in April of 2015, resulting in the second Tommy John surgery of his long career. The Cubs signed Nathan to a minor league contract in May and the six-time All-Star posted a 3.86 ERA in 11 appearances between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.
