Analysis: Deduno (1-1, 5.11 ERA) pitched into the eighth inning, the longest start for a Twins pitcher in more than a month, and gave up four hits and one run. The right-hander, called up from the minors May 24, yielded six runs over 5 1-3 innings to Detroit in his season debut that same day, a 6-0 loss.

Analysis: The Dominican right-hander was a breakout star in the tournament last month, beating the United States and Puerto Rico in back-to-back starts to lead his team to the championship. He returned to Twins camp with a solid chance of making the rotation when the season began thanks to an injury to Scott Diamond. But Deduno has battled a groin injury and will start the year at Triple-A Rochester. He only pitched one inning in spring training this season.

Analysis: With less than two weeks until the start of regular season, the Twins now will figure out how to fit Deduno into exhibition games as he rejoins the competition for the fifth spot in the rotation.
