Analysis: Matusz contributed in the bullpen during the 2012 playoffs. In 18 relief appearances during the regular season, the 25-year-old was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA.

Matusz will be the only lefty in the bullpen. He replaces J.C. Romero, who was designated for assignment Friday. Romero had a 6.75 ERA in five appearances with the Orioles.
Analysis: Matusz has pitched in 68 major league games, all of them starts. The Orioles had him serve as a reliever in four games recently with Norfolk, and he did well enough to warrant a look at the big league level.

The left-hander says he feels fine and could have pitched if needed against the Pirates, but he was pushed back after a discussion with manager Buck Showalter.
Analysis: Matusz bruised his nose while bunting during batting practice on Tuesday. He was supposed to start Wednesday against Pittsburgh, but was moved back in the rotation to Friday. Matusz says he's feeling a small measure of pain, but added, "I should be fine for Friday." Jake Arrieta will start Wednesday for the Orioles. Arrieta was demoted to the bullpen after his last start and will be throwing on four days' rest.

The 25-year-old lefthander pitched four shutout innings, allowing three hits. He struck out five and walked one in the Orioles' 6-4 loss to the Norfolk Tides.
Analysis: Matusz went 1-9 with a 10.69 ERA in an injury plagued 2011. He has 22 strikeouts and three walks in 24 2-3 innings this spring.
